Fears - Phobias |

|
|
| It is not known for sure why some
people have fears that seem, even to them, to be irrational
- such as a fear of eating in front of people, fear of being
away from a safe place or fear of dogs. However, we do know
what maintains the fears and keeps them going: avoidance. Avoiding
the thing that you fear gives an immediate sense of relief in
the short term. But in the long term, the avoidance leads to
embarrassment, lack of confidence and an increase in the fear.
This can cause a vicious cycle. To break the cycle and overcome
the fear, it is essential that you face the thing that you are
afraid of. This is easier to do if you do it early on, when
you first notice that there is a problem. If the fear you want
to tackle is long-standing, it can still be overcome, but will
take longer and require more persistence and help from others.

| Triumph Over Phobia |
 |
| Triumph Over Phobia (TOP) runs a national
network of self-help groups to help people with phobia
or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to overcome their
problems using graded self-exposure. This means learning
how to face up to your fears in a very gradual and structured
way so that eventually the anxiety should decrease. TOP
was started in 1987 with the professional help of Professor
I M Marks of the Institute of Psychiatry in London and
Celia Bonham Christie MBE MA who had overcome her fear
of flying by following self-exposure instructions from
Living with Fear (as above). TOP groups are run by trained
lay volunteers, most of whom are ex-phobics and a structured
programme is followed by group members, using Living with
Fear as a self-help manual. |
